Method of Test For Soundness of Aggregates By Use Of Sodium Sulfate

References:               AASHTO   T 104-94

Definition:

This Method is For Determination of sulfates Affects to Aggregates. This Method is more useful for Bridge Constructions, also for places which are under sulfates attack ( like waste water tanks or sewage storage). Also is a goof guide when other necessary information is missing or not available.

Apparatus (Equipment):

1. Sieves                 2. Container (basket)             3. Holding instrument          4. Balance

5. Oven                   6. Special Solution ( Sodium Sulfate)

Sampling

Follow the instruction in Sampling Page .

For Fine aggregate the materials mist be passed from sieve (9.5 mm). Each size of the sample must not exceed 100 Gr. samples must be divided into sizes as Follow:

Passing from Sieve Retained on Sieve Amount (Gr) Sieve for washing
9.5 mm(1/2 in)

4.75mm (No 4)

100±0.1

4.75mm (No 4)

4.75 mm (No 4) 2.36 mm (No 8) 100±0.1 2.36 mm (No 8)
2.36 mm (No 8) 1.18 mm (No 16) 100±0.1 1.18 mm (No 16)
1.18 mm (No 16) 600µm (No 30) 100±0.1 600µm (No 30)
600µm (No 30) 300µm (No 50) 100±0.1 300µm (No 50)

For Coarse aggregates the sample must satisfy the following amount and deviation:

Passing from Sieve Retained on Sieve Amount (Gr) Sieve for washing
63mm 50mm 3000±300 32mm
50mm 37.5mm 2000±200 32mm
37.5mm 25mm 1000±50 16mm
25mm 19.5mm 500±30 16mm
19.5mm 12.5mm 670±10 8mm
12.5mm 9.5mm 330±5 8mm
9.5mm 4.75mm 330±5 4mm

For Coarse aggregates all Materials must be retained on sieve No 4 (4.75 mm).
