Sampling Procedure of  bitumen

Same as Aggregates, there are some methods of sampling of bitumen for testing in laboratory from various place .but generally there are three source which may take sample for testing. and also the importance of sampling  is as high as testing of samples, because if the material taken from source be not uniform ,it will affect the test and final result. below is the three most important method of sampling of bitumen for testing.

Sampling from Storage Tank

Sampling from Storage Tanks
Step

1

Seal inlet valves of the tank prior to sampling, if applicable.

2

Wearing the required safety equipment, open the appropriate drain cock on the tank and allow enough material to flow to ensure that a representative sample may be taken.

3

Fill the sample container from the drain cock. Use a friction-lid can for AC graded materials; a screw top can for cutbacks, emulsions, and other asphalts that are liquid at 25 °C (77 °F).

4

Seal the sample container.

5

Attach identifying tags to the sample container, clearly showing the name of the producer, the grade, the tank and seal numbers, and any other identifying information.

6

Enter all required sample information, including all information from the sample container.

Please be assure to do:

Be sure to take enough sample from the tank according the below conditions:

  1. Be sure to take enough sample from each Tank (each 1500000 liter three samples from three levels, bottom , middle and top of the tank.
  2. Be sure to take sample from any where which represent the all other places. also try to first soft the sample by heating and then take the sample.
  3. Be sure to have all safety equipments, like Gloves resistant eye Glass and etc.

Sampling from  Pipe line

When tank cars, distributors, or drums are filled from the pipeline, the sample may be taken directly from the pipeline.

A sampling pipe of not more than 1/8th the diameter of the pipeline, with a drain cock which can be used to regulate the flow through it is required. This pipe must be inserted into a rising section of the line on the discharge side of the pump, with its opening turned to face the flow of the liquid.

Use the following procedure when sampling liquid bituminous materials from pipelines.

Step

Action

1

Open the drain cock, allow enough material to flow into a waste container to clear the sample cock and sample line of old material.

2

Fill the sample container from the drain cock.

3

Material taken in a receiver throughout the loading process should be thoroughly mixed and the sample container filled.

4

Tightly close the sample container. Label the container and enter the information needed.

Sampling from Tank or Truck

Just follow the instruction below and consider all notes in tank sampling.

Step Action

1

Carefully inspect the material for the presence of foam, sediment, or free water on top or bottom of the car or truck. Make notation of such observations.

2

When sampling from distributors, mix the material thoroughly with the pump.

3

When sampling semi-solid materials, heat the materials to fluidity. (Sample all liquid materials without heating, if possible.)

4

Obtain the sample by lowering a 1 L (1 qt.) can, attached to the sampling device, through the top hatch.

5

Pour the material into a clean container.

6

When sampling from a distributor, take the sample from the spray bar by placing a can under one of the nozzles and opening the spray bar valve for that nozzle.

7

Label the sample container and complete other information needed.
