As its name shows ,this test is for determination of amount of loss ness of bitumen by a certain heating and also it shows the amount of water mixed into the bitumen, And determine the mass of water evaporating by heating from bitumen.

First of all test the sample if contain water in surface or have external water upon it, if so ,remove that water by any regular method .if removing the water will affect the mass of and or the natural water content of the sample, changing the sample is necessary.
Before heating the sample , place 50.0±0.5 Gr , weight the sample to nearest 0.01 Gr accuracy. But remember that if the sample have more temperature during the weighting ,first cool it in room temperature and then take the weight.
Prepare the oven to be at 163 ° C, and place the sample in oven for 5 hours, note that during putting the sample into the oven the temperature may become down ,so take care that after putting the sample in oven, reach its temperature to 163° C ,and then start the test. this time is not included in 5 hours heating.
Put the rotation ratio of the test in 5-6 R/M .
after passing the time, take out the sample from oven, and cool it in normal room temperature and take the weight of the sample to nearest 0.01 Gr accuracy, then compute the loss of the mass
Loss of total mass up to 5% is reported normally ,but the loss more than 5% the report value must be as follow:
Correction Values of test result
Actual Value | Reporting Value |
5.0 | 4.5 - 5.50 |
5.5 | 4.99 - 6.01 |
6.0 | 5.48 -6.52 |
10.0 | 9.40 -10.60 |
The change between reporting value and actual value is because the most of the times the temperature and other possible reason effect to the values more than 5.0% and this obtained by many test experiences by Laboratory technicians .
